Sikfors, the last rapid in the Piteälven on its way down to the sea, has been inhabited and visited by people since long ago. Documents from the 14th century mention Sikfors as a valuable fishing spot. The availability of salmon, whitefish and netting meant that fishing was the village's main livelihood from the Middle Ages until the construction of the Sikfors power plant.
